No uninstalling XP won’t help in retrieval of password since they were not saved with the uninstall information of windows XP. It happens so because of use of even more secure encryption by windows XP compared to 98. Actually what happens is that the password files are deleted for security purpose so that, it might not go into wrong hands that can lead to illegal or unauthorized access of system resources. For future you can prepare a backup of .pwl or password files before up gradation and this time windows password recovery basically can’t be done whether it is dial-up connection, network, logon or domain password. You will have to recreate them all, when prompted by the system.
