My External hard drive won’t mount and data inaccessible?

External Seagate USB external hard drive won’t mount on desktop and so I can’t access any file. The external hard drive shows in disk utility but its all gray and on trying to mount message comes up as-

A disk attempting to mount as unknown has failed verification or failed to mount
You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read to use unreadable volume, click initialize to continue when disk is inserted. I want the files back and don’t want to reinitialize it.

Whenever there is a problem in mounting data accessibility is lost because the system cannot recognize the drive and so refuses to mount. It happens due to errors and damages made in the file system, corruption of super block or other files components, directory deletion or so.

In fact there is hardly any way including disk utility which can help you mount and access data. Drive re initialization is necessarily required so that the file structures are created once again free from any sort of damage or corruption. As you know with this data is also deleted and in order to get them back mac data recovery is required. It will scan and search for files and make its retrieval easy with data items intact. Because format does not erases data only they become inaccessible due to deletion of their entry from file system.
