How can I convert mts to avi format ?

I have some files which are in the mts format. But I want it to play them in a avi supported player. But when I was playing in the avi player then it didn’t play. My friend had told me that to play mts file in a avi supported player first you have to convert mts file into avi format with a converter software. Help me in suggesting the best converter software so that I can enjoy them in an avi supported player.
